In a first for the Northern Beaches region, Dee Why Endoscopy Unit is implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to improve diagnostic outcomes for local patients.
The clinic will have the technology by early next month which will see the Olympus CV-1500 series processor and scopes installed. This new AI platform enables real-time display of automatically detected suspicious lesions and can be applied to disorders of the stomach, oesophagus and other gastrointestinal organs.
Dee Why Endoscopy Unity CEO and Director of Nursing Linda Jenkinson said this new technology gives both clinicians and patients peace of mind that there is technology that can support observational performance in adenoma detection by providing visual support to the Endoscopist.
“The high-resolution image endoscope is used alongside a sophisticated computer system that virtually alerts you whenever a lesion appears,” Ms Jenkinson said.
“Our goal is to pick up small polyps that may have otherwise gone unnoticed and increase the adenoma detection rate to improve colorectal cancer survival rates.”
The AI technology was first launched in Europe two years ago, and Dee Why Endoscopy Unit is the first to use it in the Northern Beaches region.
“We are committed to continually improving our clinical outcomes for patients and this is just another way we are doing that,” Ms Jenkinson said.
“All our staff will receive comprehensive training during the roll-out yet the feedback already has been that they feel privileged to introduce this advanced level of endoscopic service to the region.”
“Early detection means we can support our patients to respond to any abnormalities as soon as possible,” Ms Jenkinson said.
“It is likely this advanced technology will help us save lives.”
